This year, many companies have deployed nickel-cobalt projects:
Recently, GigaMetals announced an update on the preliminary economic assessment of the Turnagain nickel-cobalt sulphide project. The results show that the project's mineral resources (including inferred resources) can be mined for 37 years and can produce an average of 2,000 tons of cobalt per year, with the goal of reaching production levels by 2021. The project is located in British Columbia, Canada, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GigaMetals.
The Liqin Indonesia HPAL project will be put into operation in the first quarter of 2021. Looking at the next ten years, Liqin will gradually develop the Indonesian wet process through in-depth cooperation with well-known domestic and foreign companies on the premise of completing the OBI wet process and fire process projects. The second and third phases of the French-fired integrated smelting project have gradually formed an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of metallic nickel and 23,000 tons of metallic cobalt, ranking among the top 5 nickel producers in the world. The nickel sulfate project of Liqin OBI nickel-cobalt project in Indonesia. The project is constructed in two phases. The planned annual production capacity of the first phase is 160,000 tons of nickel sulfate and 20,000 tons of cobalt sulfate. It is expected to be completed and commissioned in March 2021. The second phase of the project Production is expected in the second quarter of 2022.
In September of this year, Youshan Nickel Industry, a subsidiary of Shengtun Mining Holding Co., Ltd., invested in the construction of a nickel matte project with an annual output of 34,000 tons of nickel metal in Weidabe Industrial Park, Indonesia, which was officially put into operation. The designed production capacity of the project is 43,590 tons of high matte nickel and 34,000 tons of high nickel matte content per year.
In addition, in the first half of this year, Shengtun Mining carried out stable production in Congo (DRC) with an annual output of 30,000 tons of electrode copper, 3,500 tons of cobalt comprehensive utilization projects and Zhuhai Kelixin. At the same time, a wet process project with an annual output of 30,000 tons of copper and 5,800 tons of crude cobalt hydroxide (metal content) was put into operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, further increasing the production capacity of the company's cobalt products.
In March this year, Shengtun Mining completed the acquisition of Enzuri, which further enhanced the company's control over upstream resources. In addition, the company also plans to invest in the construction of the Kalongwei copper-cobalt mine owned by Ezuri, with an annual output of 30,028 tons of cathode copper and 3,556.4 tons of crude cobalt hydroxide.
According to the survey data, the global supply of nickel-cobalt ore accounted for about 18% of the total supply of cobalt raw materials in 2019, and the proportion is expected to increase to 27% in 2022. New nickel-cobalt projects will increase the supply of cobalt raw materials in the future. The cobalt supply in new nickel-cobalt projects in 2021 is expected to increase by 4,000-5,000 metal tons. At the same time, other projects will reduce supply, such as Vale’s Goro nickel-cobalt mine in New Caledonia, which will be shut down in 2021.
In the short term, the supply ratio of nickel-cobalt mines will increase, and the supply ratio of copper-cobalt mines will be reduced; in addition, the supply ratio of recycling and other primary associated cobalt mines will also increase.
